Regenerative medicine for dogs and cats
Regenerative medicine is the utilisation of one’s own cells and proteins to promote healing and repair after trauma or disease.
At STARR Veterinary Group, we offer specialised types of regenerative medicine options such as stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma.
Stem cells
Stem cells are cells that can differentiate into many different types of tissues including bone, fat, muscle, skin and cartilage. These undifferentiated cells are inside the body and called upon to repair area of damage and injury.
We can utilise the power of the stem cells to treat damaged cartilage and bone tissues and reduce inflammation and pain.
Stem cells can also be beneficial in the treatment of osteoarthritis in older animals as it promotes joint regeneration.
Platelet rich plasma
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is blood plasma that has been spun down to concentrate the platelets. Platelets contain bioactive proteins and growth factors that can initiate and accelerate tendon and ligament repair and regeneration.
PRP therapy has been proven effective in human professional athletes such as soccer, NFL and NBA players.
